Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications for an individual who can work in a fast-paced environment to serve as a Residential Education Coordinator (REC). The REC is a full-time, live-in professional who serves as the supervisor of residential communities on campus. Nebraska Wesleyan University is a small Liberal Arts university located in a mid-size university town (Lincoln, NE). We are seeking applicants who have a desire to foster communities that support the personal, social, and intellectual growth of our diverse student body.

As a full-time, hourly paid employee, this position is considered non-exempt. Non-exempt employees are those individuals who are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).  Overtime under FLSA is paid for any hours worked over 40 hours in the standard work week, Sunday through Saturday.

Responsibilities

Residential Education prioritizes work/life balance in this 12-month live-on position. Our team of Residential Education Coordinators (REC) share evening, weekend, and holiday work. Flexible scheduling and compensatory time are available accordingly. The REC reports to the Director of Residential Education and serves on a Residential Education team including 3 additional RECs, 25 Peer Assistants (PA), an Administrative Assistant. The following are major responsibilities of the job, but the job is not limited to the list below.

  • Coordinates and oversees all educational aspects of residence hall management, including staff training and supervision, student concern response, student learning opportunities, conduct procedures and crisis response. 
  • Directly supervises a staff of 5-8 Peer Assistants, investing in their development through weekly staff meetings, regular one-on-one meetings, on-going training and feedback. Indirectly supervises a staff of 25 Peer Assistants.
  • Serves on a rotating 24-hour on-call duty rotation for approximately 850 students responding to and handling crisis situations after normal business hours.
  • Serves as an outreach coordinator and resource/referral agent for campus and community resources, meeting one-on-one with students referred to the student support system.
  • Serves as hearing officer for student conduct cases providing adjudication, sanctions and follow-up based on independent judgment.
  • Creates communities that celebrate differences regardless of gender, race, religion, abilities, class, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and political affiliation. 
  • Collaborates on special projects such as Peer Assistant recruitment and hiring, housing assignment placement, summer housing, department-wide assessment, PA fall training and ongoing training.
  • Addresses student and parent concerns in order to resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Oversees the community building plan and implements a wide variety of social and educational programming for the residential communities.
  • Opportunity for collateral assignments based on interest and skills

Collateral assignments are available based on the interests and talents of each individual Residential Education Coordinator.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred, along with having a theoretical and practical knowledge of student development, its application within a residential environment. Successful candidates will possess Residential Education experience, a growth mindset, and a demonstrated ability to encourage and support inclusion. 

A successful candidate will also possess the following skills:

  • Experience in effectively establishing rapport, building relationships, and mentoring college-aged students
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, think creatively, exhibit sound judgment and assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn case management systems and experience with referrals, documentation, and active follow-up
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal cross-cultural communication skills
  • The ability to use technology and social media to educate, inform and connect with residents 
  • Experience and knowledge in crisis management, counseling and intervention programs

Residential Education Coordinators are provided with an apartment with private laundry, meal benefits and reserved parking. NWU’s live-on policy allows for a spouse, domestic partner or dependent residency in addition to being pet-friendly (some restrictions apply).
